About Mavis Chappell, M.Ed., LPC

I have been passionate about working in the field of mental health since 2001, when I began working with adult probation clients. From there, I learned that I was truly passionate about working with adults involved in the Department of Corrections, because I became aware of the various struggles and traumas involved in that lifestyle. I realized that I was most passionate about helping individuals within that population make realistic, lasting changes to regain control of their lives. It was this work that inspired me to obtain a Master’s of Education in Mental Health Counseling and Trauma and Addictions from Cambridge College in Springfield, MA.

Since that time, I have had the opportunity to continue my work within the Department of Corrections populations and am experienced in working with those that may be somewhat resistant to therapy. I have also become aware of the needs and resources for their loved ones, and have committed myself to continue to do meaningful work within the overlap between mental health and corrections from an individual and family perspective.

One thing I discovered passion about during my educational journey as a therapist is the population of LGBTQIA* individuals who are often further marginalized within the correctional system as well as in their families of origin, who likely have significant trauma and very few family supports. I have made it my passion to serve this community through a humanistic, person-centered perspective, focused on goals, results, and the rapport necessary to get through the journey together.
